I love a Breton
Stripes, stripes, stripes... any shape, style or colour, so easy to wear, that's why we love them. They seem to be a sign of Spring or Summer maybe, but to be honest we wear them comfortably all year round.
Knitted from thick wool to protect fishermen from the wind and weather, the striped Breton shirt became the official uniform of the French Navy in 1858. It was thought that the characteristic bands of colour would make it easier to spot a sailor who had fallen overboard. That's not quite the reason I need to wear stripes.
Recently I was thinking about why they are so popular and easy to wear. You feel cool and chic and possibly French (?!) in one. And not at all like a sailor. But I realised that wearing stripes has a positively tangible effect on my mood. It easy to make a a stripy decision in the morning when you are wondering what to wear. If in doubt, wear stripes. You may have tried other wardrobe staples but there is nothing like a Breton.
Whether you're a vertical striped shirt person or a horizontal striped T-shirt person have you wondered why you reach for a stripy favourite? This idea does of course translate into other items .. have you seen our stripey trousers?
